Distinguished Alumnus AwardEstablished in 2008, The Distinguished Alumnus Award is given each year to a PDS alumnus who demonstrates a love for the school and represents the goals, ideals, and imagination of Presbyterian Day School.

2017 - Trow Gillespie ‘59

Paul Trowbridge Gillespie, Jr. ‘59 is President of NewSouth Capital Management Inc., which he co-founded in 1985. For the ten years prior to co-founding NewSouth, Mr. Gillespie was a co-founder, Vice President, and Secretary of Southeastern Asset Management,Inc.

2016 - Charles “Chuck” Foster Smith, Jr. '60

Chuck is Chairman of National Guard Products and Jordan Aluminum Extrusion Company located in Memphis. Chuck has been extremely dedicated to Presbyterian Day School and currently serves as Finance Chair on the PDS Board of Trustees. He continues to be very involved in Ducks Unlimited, serving as National Secretary.

2015 - Robert Edwin Loeb, Sr. ’67

Bob Loeb is president of Loeb Properties and is the visionary behind the revitalization of Overton Square, which is once again a thriving entertainment, dining, and shopping destination for Memphis.

2014 - Allen Benners Morgan, Jr. '55

At the age of 27, Morgan started a brokerage firm with a friend. This firm, Morgan Keegan, grew and as it did, Morgan gained respect within the financial services industry. He served as Chairman and CEO from 1969 until 2003, and he was Chairman of Morgan Keegan and Vice Chairman of Regions Financial until his retirement in 2007.

2013 - David Montague '76

David Montague '76 currently serves as the Director of the Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR). Prior to MTR, David served for two years (2005-2007) with Campus Crusade for Christ in East Asia. From 2000-2005, David was the Director of Service Over Self, an urban home-repair ministry in the Binghampton neighborhood of Memphis.

2012 - Paul Tudor Jones '66

“Everything good I have done in my life begins with the religious training I received growing up...most of my religious training came from my time spent at Presbyterian Day School.” Paul Tudor Jones '66 is the founder of Tudor Investment Corporation, a priavte asset management company and hedge fund. Paul made his fortune in 1987 after taking large short positions before the market crashed.

2011 - W. Hampton Sides '74

Hampton Sides is the author of the acclaimed best-selling narrative histories Ghost Soldiers, Blood and Thunder, and most recently Hellhound On His Trail . He is editor-at-large for Outside magazine and has also written for National Geographic, The New Yorker, Newsweek, The New York Times, National Public Radio, and The Washington Post. His magazine work, collected in numerous published anthologies, has been twice nominated for National Magazine Awards for feature writing.

2010 - Fred Smith '56

Fred Smith is founder, chairman, and CEO of FedEx. Fred is a visionary in the business world and the father of the overnight delivery business. Under his leadership FedEx routinely aids in disaster relief and has been recognized and honored for its committment to corporate giving.

2009 - Rick Moore '57

Rick Moore '57 is the chairman of Lehman-Roberts Co., a Memphis paving contractor in business for over 75 years. Dedicating his personal life to his faith and family, Rick and his wife, Carey, are blessed with five children and twelve grandchildren. He has served as an elder at Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis as well as Director and former Chairman of Young Life Memphis.

2008 - Pitt Hyde '55

Our inaugural Disinguished Alumnus Award was given to Pitt Hyde '55. Best known as the founder of AutoZone, Hyde has also done fantastic work to benefit all of Memphis through the Hyde Family Foundation.
