Building Boys, Making Men is a PDS-created program designed to give boys a Godly vision and definition of manhood.
We believe that boys should be intentionally taught about authentic manhood and have a Biblical framework for making wise and edifying choices during their teenage years and beyond.
We believe that, absent a compelling vision for Godly manhood, boys will accept a number of unhealthy and unwholesome myths of manhood that will short-circuit the plan God has for them as men. In addition to developing this vision for manhood, the program helps to develop a boy's faith, character and values.
The definition of manhood we teach our boys:
A real man glorifies God by seeking an adventuresome life
of purpose and passion as he protects and serves others.
How We Teach the Program
Our boys learn this definition and the seven virtues listed above through chapel programs, class meetings, devotions, classes, and their relationships with the PDS faculty and staff. The program develops a boy’s character, values and faith and offers many practical applications. The specific curriculum for our boys varies depending on the grade level and is age appropriate.6th graders take a year-long seminar centered on the question of what it means to be a man. They read and discuss the book, Flight Plan: Your Mission To Become A Man, written by Headmaster Lee Burns and Chaplain Braxton Brady. The 194 page book discusses the definition, virtues and myths of manhood, and then it covers numerous teenage issues they will encounter, ranging from peer pressure and drinking, to dating and sex, to pornography, music, money, and school. 6th graders regularly meet with their mentors to discuss these issues and their journey to manhood.
The Building Boys, Making Men Speaker Series
PDS hosts for parents and adults an annual speaker series on raising boys and many of the topics related to their journey to manhood. The school aims to develop a close partnership with PDS parents, as well as be a resource to parents, educators and others around the country in their work with boys.
Flight Plan Curriculum
Schools, churches, families or other people who work with boys may purchase the 6th grade curriculum, which may also be used with older boys as well.Strategic Parenting: Reinforce These Virtues at Home
At the beginning of each month, we'll be providing parents with talking points and action points to complement what we're doing at school. It's all about strategic parenting.
