Grizzlies at PDS: Boys, Teachers, Parents and Alums Create Life-Size Grizzlies

grizzliesGrizzlies spirit has struck PDS, and it's soon to be (weather permitting) on display for all driving by on Poplar Avenue.

Members of the PDS community have collaborated on the design and creation of a wooden, eight-foot tall set of Grizzlies (the five starters, plus Coach Hollins and Griz). "We want to show our support of the team and love of Memphis," says Headmaster Lee Burns.

Individuals involved in the project include PDS boys Kemp Conrad (2nd grade), Andrew Dobbs (2nd grade), Tre Johnson (5th grade), Robert King (4th grade), Matt Michael (5th grade), Edwin Rawson (5th grade), Thomas Rogers (5th grade), Blake Sexton (5th grade), Russell Williamson (5th grade), and Andrew Xu (2nd grade).

Two PDS alums, Jackson Pacheco and Shea Gabrielleschi, joined the current PDS boys in offering their hard work and artistic skills.

Art teacher Darla Linerode-Henson coordinated the project in her art room. Several of her colleagues on the faculty joined in the fun, including PE teachers Spencer McLean and Garrett Harrison, as well as Learning Coaches Abbie Fowler and Amy Fruitt, 2nd grade teacher Beth Diaz, and substitute teacher Rhonda Test.

Several parents, Olga King and Brian Fowler, joined in the fun.

All in all, it was a team effort, led by our great art teacher, Mrs. Linerode-Henson.

PDS hopes that Grizzlies fans enjoy the art.

Week of April 29

Monday, 06 May 2013 - by Natalie Rauscher

Wow! Where has this year gone? We cannot believe it is already May! This week we began preparing for our Mother’s Day Tea. The boys are looking forward to such a special day! We hope that all of our JK mothers will join us next Friday! It will be a special memory you will never forget!

This week we also learned our last letter of the alphabet,  Z,  and continued learning how to tell time to the hour. For the letter Z, we made our zebra letter card and practiced our handwriting.   For telling time, we have been playing a lot of games that match the analogue time to the digital time and have practiced writing digital time as well.  Your boys are doing so well with this skill!  Next week we will focus on letter review, writing on lined paper, and will introduce color words. We have had another great week in JK!

Please make sure to check our page on the website to download the May calendar!

Looking ahead and Reminders:

-       Friday, May 10 is the JK Mother’s Day Tea – Our tea will be at 11:00 a.m. in the EC Commons - attire is “Sunday dress” for the boys

-       Tuesday, May 21 from 10-11 a.m. is the JK end of the year party at Cordova Bowling Lanes

-       Last day of school is Wednesday, May 23 – It is a half-day dismissal (10:40 a.m.).

Week of April 22

Friday, 03 May 2013 - by Natalie Rauscher

Wow! What an exciting week last week was! Thank you to all of our parents for coming to EC Family Night! The boys worked so hard the past couple of weeks preparing the Mesozoic Museum tour! We are very proud of them!

Last week we finished up our dinosaur unit focusing on paleontology!  Two favorite activities last week were excavating a chocolate chip cookie and the dino dig! Using a toothpick, the boys had to excavate chocolate chips from a cookie, just as a paleontologist removes fossils from hard rock and dirt.  For the dino dig, the boys followed big dinosaur footprints to the rock playground near the elementary building. The boys had fun searching for bones in the rocks ! After finding the bones, they used all of their tools to investigate, measure the bones, and brush away dirt from the bones. We concluded our week with a very special treat! We Skyped with a real paleontologist in Argentina! He was able to tell us about dinosaurs that used to live in Argentina, such as the Argentinosaurus, the biggest dinosaur in the world! The boys loved being able to share what they have learned!

We also have started learning to tell time to the hour in JK! We introduced the analogue clock to the boys and discussed the short hand and the long hand.   After watching a BrainPop Jr. video clip, we also learned how to write time to the hour and how time may appear on a digital clock.

Thanks to all of our parents for supporting the Fun Run this week as well!  We appreciate you taking the time to help get pledges! They had a fun filled day of running and super heroes!

Looking ahead and reminders:

-       Friday, May 10 is JK Mother’s Day Tea

-       Tuesday, May 21 will be the JK end of the year party at Cordova Bowling Lanes

-       Last Day of School is Wednesday, May 22 (Half Day Dismissal)

Week of April 15

Wednesday, 24 April 2013 - by Natalie Rauscher

T-Rex, Pteradactyl, Apatosaurus, Oh MY! Dinosaurs continue to roam in JK! This week we have been learning about prehistoric fossils, dinosaur babies, and measuring dinosaur footprints and using measurement to determine how big these massive animals really were! Did you know that the Apatasaurus was 70 ft. long!  We charted which dinosaurs would fit inside our classroom and which would not.  We also further discussed which dinosaurs were meat eaters (carnivores) and which were plant eaters (herbivores).  We can not wait until you all see the amazing work we have been doing within this unit!  The boys are so excited to share all of this information with you on EC Family Night! We hope you and your family will join us for the Mesozoic Museum Tour starting at 6:00 next Thursday in our classroom!

This week we also learned the letter Ii. We practiced handwriting, made our insect letter card, and did several language arts activities on the laptops.  What a great week!

Week of April 8

Monday, 15 April 2013 - by Natalie Rauscher

Dinosaurs are under way in JK! This week we have been learning about dinosaur babies, dinosaur nests, what color the dinosaurs were, the three time periods of the Mesozoic age, making footstep steggies, and painting flying pteranodons! Watch out! They will be flying the night of EC Family Night! We are even hatching dinosaur eggs in JK right now! The boys have also created their own theories about why the dinosaurs became extinct and have written about it in a class journal. We will continue our dinosaur unit next week, becoming paleontologists to search for dinosaur bones, excavate fossils, and to make our own tool kits! The boys are so excited about this unit and continue to share all of their knowledge about dinosaurs!

This week we also continued measurement and learned the letter X.  We made our X-ray letter card,  practiced X handwriting and identified many words that had the letter X in it.   For measurement, we continued to use rulers and tape measures to measure all kinds of thigs around the classroom.  Next week we will even measure the size of dinosaur footprints!
What a fun week!
