Subscribing to Your Son's Calendar
PDS uses Google Calendar to manage events.
One of the benefits of PDS using Google Calendar is the ability to subscribe to those calendars on your iPhone, in Outlook, or on your own Google Calendar account.
When subscribing to calendars, please note that in order to get a complete picture of your son's classroom calendar, you'll need to subscribe to more than just the his section (i.e. SK1 or 3A). A single class calendar is made up of many individual calendars. As an example, to get a full listing of events for SK1, you would need to subscribe to these calendars: All, EC, Letter Days, SK - All, SK1, Lunch.

How Can I Make Sure I Receive the Emails PDS Sends?
Many e-mail service providers, including AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo!, etc, have created spam filters to prevent unwanted messages from reaching your inbox. Unfortunately, these filters can also block e-mail messages you actually want to receive, such as those from the school. To ensure continued receipt of our e-mails, you may want to add our e-mail address: info@pdsmemphis.org, to your address book and reconfigure your spam filter, if you use one.
The links below provide recommendations based on which e-mail provider you use:

How do we get a carpool number for our new carpool?
How do we get a carpool number for our new carpool?
Early Childhood: In early childhood, teachers provide parents with carpool tags with name rather than numbers. That is done on the first or second day of school after collecting all of the carpool information sheets.
Parents of Early Childhood students should contact their son's teacher and request a carpool name card to be displayed in the front passenger side window.
Elementary: Boys in grades 1-3 have carpool cards. These cards were distributed at the parent meetings. If a parent did not attend the parent meetings, the carpool cards along with other items distributed at the meeting may be picked up at Marilyn Seaton's desk.

Who has access to see the online parent directory?
The online parent directory is only visible when parents are logged into the website. The general public does not see it, and results from the directory do not show up when the general public is searching the website.
You can find the parent directory under the Parents menu on the website.
You should have the ability to edit your enrtry to amend or remove information that you don't want to be visible. If for any reason, you are unable to edit your entry, please let Winston Baccus know.
Note: there will still be a printed parent directory that will be sent home with the boys in early September 2009.

May I eat lunch at school with my son?
PK-JK: PK full-day, PK 2/3, and JK students eat in their rooms. Because of the space constraints and the age of the children, parents do not join them for lunch.
SK: We ask that you wait until after Christmas to join your Senior Kindergarten boy.
The Senior Kindergarten year is filled with first experiences, and eating in the lunchroom is one of those milestones. It is important that we give the boys ample time to adjust to the new responsibilities that come with eating in the cafeteria.
We invite and encourage you to join us at this later date. The charge is $6.00.
Elementary (1st-6th):
Yes. We’d love for you to have lunch with him, though not at the very beginning of the year so that he can better adjust to school. You may begin to join us for lunch after Labor Day.
The charge is $6.00 .
Is it important to make time to eat lunch with my son a few times? How many?
Sharing lunch with your son can be a special time for both parent and son. We encourage you to limit your lunch visits to 1-3 times a year.

If I have something to drop off for my son, where do I take it?
We know how rushed some mornings can be, that items get left in carpool, and that unanticipated changes may happen during the day.
If you need to drop off something for your son who is an Early Childhood student, bring it to the reception desk in the Early Childhood Center.
If your son is in grades 1-6, items should be dropped off at the reception desk in the lobby of the main entrance.
We ask that you not interrupt the learning for your son or his classmates by going to your son’s classroom. We will make sure he gets the items you dropped off.

How often does my son have recess?
We know that getting the body moving facilitates better learning over all.
Early Childhood: Early childhood students have recess every day. Students go outside unless the temperature is below freezing. On day when the boys cannot get out, we insure that they have some opportunity to move even if it is within the classroom
Elementary (1st-6th): Boys in grades 1-3 have both P.E. and recess everyday. Because the boys will go outside unless it is below freezing, the boys should wear a coat on cold days.
Boys in 4th and 6th grade have P.E. each day and recess 2 days each week. Boys in 6th grade have P.E. each day, but do not go to recess.

What advice should parents consider regarding extra activities beyond school?
Because each child and each family is different, there is no magic formula for the number of hours a boy should spend in extra activities after the school day ends.
Being involved in sports, music lessons and other activities can enrich a boy's life and further develop his talents and interests; however, we also know that when a boy is over-scheduled, it can have negative effects on his school performance and his interactions with his peers.
If your son is having trouble falling asleep and/or waking up, if he complains of being tired, if he is having trouble completing homework assignments, or if his grades are slipping, we ask that you carefully consider limiting the number of hours he is involved in extracurricular activities.

What time should my son go to bed during a school night?
Research tells us that young children need between 10 and 12 hours of sleep per day.
You will find that bedtime is often the time when your son will be the most eager to share the events of the day. We would encourage you to be available to help him process his day by making bedtime as pleasant and unhurried as possible.
As important as the amount of sleep is the routine you build around bedtime and waking in the morning.

What is my role in homework?
Early Childhood: Senior Kindergarten teachers will send work home periodically to complete or practice. The practice time that you spend with your son helps him to understand its importance and gives you the opportunity to praise him for the progress he is making. While your interest is important, helping your son develop the habit of working independently and taking responsibility for the completion of the work is equally important. The more independent he is as a young child, the more comfortable he will be working independently as the homework expectations increase with age.
It is helpful if you can provide a space for him to work that is free of distractions. Please supply your son with pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, and glue sticks for assignments to be completed at home. We encourage your availability if he experiences difficulty but suggest that you guard against making homework time a family affair.
Elementary (1st-6th): Elementary Parents in grades 1-6 have a key role to play in assuring that their sons are completing their homework, studying for tests and arriving at school prepared for the academic day.
In grades 1-3 parents may guide and monitor the homework process in order to help develop positive study skills and habits. By the time a boy is in 4th-6th grade, he should be responsible for his own homework.
Sending positive messages about the importance of completing homework and encouraging independence will allow your son to gain self -confidence and develop study skills that that will last throughout his school career.

What does the school do when a boy gets in trouble?
Early Childhood: We find that we have very few discipline problems at PDS.
Each grade level in early childhood has an age and developmentally appropriate classroom management plan that focuses primarily on encouraging good behavior. At times, most students need a gentle reminder of what is appropriate. Each grade level builds on the plan from the grade before using charts, verbal reminders, time out, notes home, conversations with the Head of Early Childhood and/or parent teacher conferences for more severe disruptions.
Every day, each boy starts with a clean slate. At the core of our discipline plan is the effort to help each boy develop self-control and responsibility for his behavior. We find that partnering with parent increases the chances that he will do just that.
Elementary (1st-6th):Most routine disciplinary matters are handled by your son's teacher or teachers. They are the primary and initial contact for you about disciplinary matters. Should a boy not show improvement following correction from the teacher, the Principal of the Elementary Division will intervene. Though sometimes difficult in the short-run, discipline is a unique opportunity to grow a boy' character and sense of responsibility and decision-making.

What is a Happygram?
Happygrams have been a tradition at PDS for over 25 years. They are a way that we recognize a boy, a group of boys, or an entire class for a job well done.
A boy may get a Happygram for a number of reasons. A few are:
- showing kindness to a classmate
- going the extra mile
- giving great effort on his work, or anything else a teacher or administrator may deem happygram worthy.
The happygram itself is a small yellow piece of paper with a smiley face. Whoever is giving the happygram writes a short note to the boy and signs it. Many of the PDS boys line the inside of their lockers with their happygrams.

How often is it appropriate to email a teacher?
Generally speaking, a normal amount of email from a parent to a teacher would be 1-3 times a month. If you find that you are emailing a teacher more than that, it is probably best to arrange a conference to discuss the issue. Important issues are better addressed in person rather than via email. We want the vast majority of time our teachers spend to be directly teaching and mentoring the boys (and planning excellent instruction) rather than being overwhelmed with emails.

What is the school's dress code?
A neat, tasteful appearance contributes to a positive learning attitude and environment. Only collared shirts are permitted, and shirttails must be tucked in.
Most of our boys wear shorts to school year round but boys are allowed to wear trousers in various colors.
Jeans are not permitted.
All boys must wear tennis shoes, as they will be running and exercising as part of PE and/or recess.
Early Childhood: The Early Childhood dress code is a bit more flexible. A good rule of thumb is to dress your son in clothing that allows him to take care of all personal hygiene needs independently and with ease. A detailed guideline for dress regulations is found in your student handbook.

Why doesn’t school get out at the same time for all the boys?
Our youngest boys aren’t able to sustain their attention and energy as long as the older ones, so it is developmentally appropriate to have a different length school day for different age boys. What if I am running late to pick up my son in the afternoon?
Don't worry. He will be well supervised and in the company of other boys.
PDS provides a lengthy grace period for late pick-up during which it does not charge families. However, boys not picked up within 30 minutes of their dismissal time will be taken to Aftercare and and charged a drop-in fee of $25.00.
We are aware that things happen to delay pickup from time to time. Our goal is to get your son home safely, and we will reassure him that you are on your way and calm any fear that may result from the delay.
Early Childhood: EC boys who are not picked up on time in the carpool line are taken to the lobby of the EC building.

What number(s) would you suggest that I keep in my cell phone for PDS?
We'd suggest the main school number, which is 842-4600. That line is monitored from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., and someone will direct your call.
You may also want to store the direct line for Early Childhood Head Debbie Isom (842-4612) if you have an EC boy, and Elementary Principal Mark Fruitt (842-4610) if you have an Elementary Division boy.
An Administrative Assistant, Cyndy Wright, can be reached directly by calling 842-4678. Your son’s teacher may give you a contact number at the fall parent meeting. It would be a good idea to include that number in your call list as well.

Can my son bring his DS or other toys to school to use in Early Room or in Aftercare?
Early Childhood:
No. In early room, he will have the opportunity to visit quietly with classmates or view an age appropriate video. He may elect to look at a book that he brought from home, but we do not allow students to bring toys or other items to early room. Your son is there for a very brief time and early childhood boys tend to have some difficulty keeping up with extra items. You can help us make Early Room a good experience by reviewing the guidelines with your son.
Elementary (1st-6th): Boys enrolled in Aftercare are allowed to bring handheld video games and/or iPods to use in Aftercare, but they cannot use them during Early Room.
They are allowed to play with them in Aftercare after homework, free play and exercise are completed. The boys must keep these items in their backpacks throughout the day and are not allowed to play with them in Early Room or recess.

What time do I need to get my son to school on the first day?
Aim to be parking by 7:45, so you can walk him into his classroom and have him there around 7:50. The school day starts at 8:00.
Allow some extra time for traffic congestion and finding a parking place. We’ll have a team of administrators, teachers, coaches and security to greet and help you in the lot.
Park in the big parking lot that faces Poplar Avenue wherever you see a spot. The lot will be crowded that first day. There is also a lot across the street on Central Avenue. We’ll have a security guard to help families across the street if they park on Central.

What do I do on the first morning of school?
Enjoy the moment with your son.
Walk him into his classroom. Take a picture of him. Give him a hug (older PDS boys may not want a hug or picture taken, especially in front of their classmates; ask him about this the night before).
Have him in his classroom between 7:45 – 8:00. Say goodbye by 8:00.
Attend Convocation (Wednesday) in the sanctuary for 1st – 6th grade boys (all parents welcome).
Have a sentimental cry and a celebratory cup of coffee that school has begun.

Is there a Grandparents' Day video available for purchase?
PDS used to contract with a company to allow for sales of a Grandparents' Day keepsake video. The last time this was done was in 2005, and only a handful of DVDs were sold, leaving the school responsible for several thousand dollars worth of work since the videos didn't sell in a large enough volume to cover the costs of production.
Because of this, the decision was made to end sales of keepsake videos.
We have just been made aware of a video of The Grandparents' Day program made by one of the audio engineers we contracted with for the program. We will be posting that video on the website. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide DVDs of the video.
View the video from Grandparents' Day 2009.
Video from the 2011 Grandparents' Day program will be posted on the website the Monday following the event.

When I click on 4th grade the pages are the same. I can not pull up 4AB.
They are actually almost completely identical.
The only difference between the 2 pages will be in the homework assignments for the core subjects, and from time to time, there will be different news on each of them, but most of the time, the news section will be identical as well.
Once the teachers start posting homework items, that's when you'll see some differences.

How are boys at PDS assigned a homeroom?
Each student at PDS is carefully and prayerfully placed into a homeroom as the result of a comprehensive and thoughtful process. That process is supervised by the Head of Early Childhood for boys in PK-SK and by the Assistant Headmaster for Teaching and Learning and the Elementary Principal for boys in grades 1-6. Before making class lists, the administrators meet each spring with the current teachers to seek input regarding each boy's academic, social and emotional needs. It is our goal to create balanced classrooms that include a variety of personalities and learning styles.
While requests for a specific homeroom teacher cannot be honored, the school may in rare cases initiate conversations with parents for guidance in assigning a homeroom if there is a special need.

What is the policy regarding Facebook and other social media?
From Facebook's privacy page:
-
Children Under Age 13 Facebook does not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from anyone under the age of 13 or knowingly allow such persons to register. If you are under 13, please do not attempt to register for Facebook or send any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, or email address. No one under age 13 may provide any personal information to or on Facebook. In the event that we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information as quickly as possible. If you believe that we might have any information from or about a child under 13, please contact us through the form on our privacy help page.
Facebook is an invaluable tool for communication, however, the Facebook corporate policy does not allow for children under 13 to register. For that reason, we do not use Facebook in our classrooms. However, we do use it as a tool to communicate with parents and alumni.
In the event that a PDS faculty member does receive a friend request from a current student, our policy is to not accept the request.

The Knowledge Base is a place to search for answers to frequently asked questions about PDS. You can ask questions anonymously via an online form, and we'll get the that information posted online. The chances are pretty good that other parents want to know the answers to the same question.
We hope to also keep this updated with answers to questions that come into the main PDS phone number, serving as a real-time compendium of PDS knowledge.

Do you have any programs for boys between 1 and 3 years old?
We have a nursery that serves our faculty and staff, but no full time program for children under the age of three. Both boys and girls age eighteen months to three years old can enjoy Toddler Tales, which is an hour-long story time we offer three times a year. You may register online under the Programs tab on the website.
We are accepting applicants for boys who will turn three by June first of 2012. If your son fits that criteria and you are interested in PDS for the 2011 school year, please contact Jan Conder, Director of Admissions at 842-4618. Thank you for your interest in PDS.

Once my son is enrolled, what does PDS expect of me?
We are blessed to have a school in which parents and guardians are actively engaged in positive and constructive partnership with the school. As a school, we seek to build close bonds with our families; to be accessible, open, and user-friendly; and to assure that our relationships and dialogue with parents and guardians enable us to serve our boys as well as possible. PDS needs and expects its parents and guardians to support the school’s mission, core values, faculty, administrators, staff, curriculum, policies and decisions, and reserves the right to dismiss from the school a boy whose parents or guardians are unable, unwilling, or incapable of this support.

How does the tuition assistance process work?
Click here for the process. A small, confidential Scholarship Committee will make awards to those families that qualify (as determined by SSS). Despite our strong commitment to our tuition assistance program and to enrolling a very strong student body, each year the number of accepted applicants who qualify for tuition assistance is more than we are able to support. Therefore, a portion of the demonstrated need is typically awarded. After March 1 Tuition Assistance funds are limited. PDS will not make tuition assistance awards to families that do not qualify or amounts that exceed the demonstrated need.

If we are applying for tuition assistance, will that have a bearing on the admission decision?
No. We make our admission decision without regard to a family’s financial circumstances. It is our aim to provide tuition assistance for each family that qualifies for it. Finances should not prevent a boy from attending PDS. PDS provides over $785,000 in tuition assistance. Ask Jan Conder for more details on the tuition assistance process.

What is the best way to prepare my son for his evaluation day at PDS?
Make sure he gets a good night’s sleep and eats a good breakfast that morning. Be low key about the evaluation day (campus visit) at PDS. For early childhood applicants, you might want to discuss the day as a fun chance to go look at a school, play with some other boys and do some work. My son was born in late spring. What if I wish to "hold him back?"
Be sure to let the admission office know your concerns and your preference. The school, however, does abide by a long-standing evaluation placement policy for pre-kindergarten through first grade, which reads:
"In grades pre-kindergarten through first, each boy who applies for admission will be evaluated for the grade level appropriate for his age. For example, if a boy will be age 4 on or before June 1, he must be evaluated for junior kindergarten. He may not apply for the pre-kindergarten; however, if the school determines that he would be better placed in the pre-kindergarten, then he may be either recommended or required to enter pre-kindergarten."

It is important to begin developing an attitude of lifetime fitness in our youngest students. As part of a carefully designed, developmentally appropriate program of lifetime fitness, pre-kindergarten students will be introduced to the use of the climbing wall at the very lowest level.
