Why ThanksLiving Is Just Getting Started

We’re almost finished with PDS’ annual celebration of ThanksLiving — but hopefully we are just getting started living a life of thankfulness.

By this point in November, I hope you’ve had a chance to see the ThanksLiving wall at PDS. Over the past three weeks, our boys have been looking for ways to practice gratitude every day, writing down what they did on a stick note, and sticking that to a big wall at the school. Three weeks in, the notes have completely filled the first section of the wall and are starting to spill around the corner. We love seeing the wall at the school fill up with sticky notes of how boys have shown thankfulness on a daily basis — and not just to get ready for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Delivering Forgotten Items - Teaching Boys Responsibility

At PDS we believe that it is the responsibility of each boy to arrive at school prepared for the school day. Because we want our boys to learn how to be responsible, we ask that parents of boys in grades 1–6 not deliver forgotten items such as homework, signed papers, school supplies, library books, backpacks, etc. to school once the school day has started. Interrupting classroom instruction to deliver items during the school day is disruptive to the learning process of all boys.

We do, of course, know that boys might from time to time forget an item. Forgotten items will not stop a boy from learning and participating in class during the day. If it is absolutely necessary that a boy must have a forgotten item in order to participate in class, the teacher will allow the boy to call home. Boys may not call home to ask that an item be delivered to school without permission from the teacher.

Any student who forgets his lunch may purchase lunch in the cafeteria. If a parent wants to deliver a forgotten lunch to school, he/she may drop the lunch at the main desk. The boy will be allowed to pick up the forgotten lunch on his way to the cafeteria.

If a student forgets sports equipment for after school athletics or supplies for an after school music lesson or enrichment class, parents may also deliver those supplies to the main desk. Students will be allowed to pick up those items after dismissal.

A Reminder of PDS' Policy on Bringing Phones and Tech to School

Dear Parents,

The holiday season is upon us. What a great time of year to be thankful for all that we have been given! As one holiday passes to the next, I imagine that our boys will begin to make Christmas lists filled with various items of interest. We live in a time of technological discovery. It seems that new gadgets are being released daily that can do things we once thought impossible.

It is always our intent at PDS to keep our boys focused on learning in the classroom. With this in mind, we have policies in place to protect our boys from outside distractions. Please note that PDS boys are not allowed to have cell phones at school. In addition, boys will not be allowed to wear technology at school that accesses the Internet, makes phone calls, sends texts, takes pictures, or interacts with apps. Knowing that some boys have or may receive these items, we wanted to remind you of this policy.

Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the season!
