Congratulations to Battle Boyd, Class of 2011 for being honored as a 2012 Keeper of the Dream Award Winner. This award recognizes youth who have demonstrated "extraordinary courage, compassion, leadership or service toward others".
While at PDS, Battle was involved in several successful community projects including a local shoe drive where Battle solicited over 300 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls to distribute to the people of Haiti after the country was devastated by an earthquake. He continues to read and mentor to underprivileged children. Battle has also developed a sports uniform drive that will benefit community youth centers and teams in uderprivileged areas of the Mid-South. Keeper of the Dream Awards were given at the 2012 Freedom Award Public Forum.
13 PDS alumni from the Class of 2007 have earned the distinction of National Merit Semifinalist or Commended Scholar. Congratulations to the following for being named National Merit Semifinalist: Philip Aiken, Forrest Field, William Hoehn, Farhan Kathawala, Bennett Mercer, David Montgomery, Andrew Renshaw and Mac Trammell. Congratulations to the following for being named as a Commended Scholar: Will Kaelin, Andrew Miller, Bobby Scott, Edward Simpson, and Nathan Vogt. Way to go!
On Friday, April 27, PDS honored Paul Tudor Jones ‘66 at the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Luncheon. Over 400 PDS alumni, parents, and friends attended as well as the 6th grade class.
PDS is pleased to announce that Wade Hampton Sides ’74 has been named the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus, the highest award given to any of our 3,500+ alumni.
Hampton Sides is the author of the acclaimed best-selling narrative histories Ghost Soldiers, Blood and Thunder, and most recently Hellhound On His Trail
. He is editor-at-large for Outside magazine and has also written for National Geographic, The New Yorker, Newsweek, The New York Times,
National Public Radio, and The Washington Post. His magazine work, collected in numerous published anthologies, has been twice nominated for National Magazine Awards for feature writing. Hampton currently lives in Santa Fe with his wife Anne and their three boys.
