Dear Parents of Mandarin Students,
We recognize that learning a world language is an important part of a well-rounded education, and we are deeply proud of the opportunities we have provided in Mandarin over the past years. The program introduced many students to the beauty and complexity of the Chinese language and culture, and we are grateful to the dedicated educators who made that possible.
Last year, we made the decision to transition our Mandarin students to Spanish beginning with the 2025–26 school year and for the remainder of their time at PDS. This decision followed a thoughtful and deliberate review of program enrollment trends, staffing considerations, and alignment with our broader curricular goals. At that time, we were able to continue offering Mandarin in first and second grades for one additional year. As we move into the 2026–27 school year, however, all PDS students will take Spanish as their world language.
We believe that the benefits of studying a world language are undeniable. Research continues to show that learning about another language improves communication and cognitive skills, enhances creativity, strengthens memory, and builds problem-solving skills. Additionally, studying a world language at a young age is one of the most empowering ways for students to investigate the world around them. Opening the doors to new cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking support our goal for PDS boys to become globally competent citizens, and we are confident that your son will continue to reap all of these benefits through our Spanish program. Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world—including across the United States—and learning it will allow your son to engage with a rich diversity of communities both locally and globally. Moreover, Spanish is consistently offered in the schools our boys attend after PDS, ensuring long-term continuity and deeper fluency.
Your sons will soon get to know Mrs. Adriana Moore, PDS Elementary Spanish Teacher. Mrs. Moore, a native Spanish speaker, has been a valued member of the PDS community since 2021. She looks forward to meeting your sons and building on their understanding of the Spanish language from their early childhood years.
