Crusader Chess Team

Building Strategic Minds

PDS is excited to announce the launch of the Crusader Chess Team, an engaging and competitive program designed for students in grades 1 through 6. This team is set to foster strategic thinking, sportsmanship, and a love for chess among our young learners.

Exciting Competitions Ahead

The Crusader Chess Team will participate in several competitions throughout the year, including:

  • Shelby County Individual Competition
  • PDS Internal Team Competitions (Fall Competition)
  • Memphis Chess Club (4th Tuesday of every month)
  • Tennessee State Tournament
  • Scholastic Individual Regionals (October 19th)
"Results show that just one year of chess tuition will improve a student’s learning abilities, concentration, application, sense of logic, self-discipline, respect, behavior, and the ability to take responsibility for his/her own actions."
Gary Kasparov, Chess Grandmaster

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost for the Crusader Chess Team?

The cost for participating in the Crusader Chess Team is based on full or partial participation.

Full Participation $325 per season
Partial Participation $200 (for boys in Grades 5-6 involved in Crusader sports)

This fee covers all team activities and competitions.

We also want to highlight that boys participating in sports (Grades 5–6) are encouraged to join the chess team as well.

What if I already signed up for PDS Chess Club Session 1? Can I transfer over to Crusader Chess instead?

If you have participated in a TN Scholastic regional tournament in the past, you are eligible to transfer from the PDS Chess Club to the Crusader Chess Team.

Can I participate if I’m involved in 5th or 6th Crusaders sports?

Yes, students participating in Crusader athletic teams and Crusader Chess can also opt for partial participation. Students will be able to participate in chess as long as it does not conflict with their athletic commitments.

How does PDS value commitment to both sports and chess teams?

We equally value commitment from boys to both sports and chess teams, and have intentionally designed the Crusader Chess Team schedule to minimize conflicts with athletics as much as possible.
